Dame Laurentia McLachlan, Abbess of Stanbrook was a person without frontiers. Her friendships ranged from the very outspoken George Bernard Shaw, who called her "an enclosed nun with an unenclosed mind", the very Roman Catholic Cardinal Gasquet and the very Anglican Canon Wilson to the agnostic Sydney Cockerell.
