Lovejoy, a slick antiques dealer and sometime thug, is blackmailed into learning Italian and insinuating himself near the Vatican to retrieve a priceless Chippendale table in the possession of the Pope. The outrageous venture that begins as a comic caper turns deadly serious even before Lovejoy gets the hang of things.
