Den albanska flickan Emine måste gifta sig med en man hon inte känner. I romanen följer vi turvis Emine i 1990-talets Jugoslavien och hennes yngste son Bekim i 2010-talets Helsingfors. I 1990-talets Jugoslavien rasar kriget. I Helsingfors bär Bekim på en längtan. Han söker kärlek, sex och tillhörighet. Men hur skaffar man sig en identitet när man varken hör hemma i det nya eller det gamla?.
