Little Sarah is found in the snow: an orphaned new-born baby. She is taken in at Meadow Hall to be trained as a maid. At 14 Sarah runs away dressed as a boy, meets good-hearted Aidan and impulsive Danby. When Sarah is found out, Aidan takes her to the workhouse. Reunited as adults, Sarah holds a secret about Danby, Aidan and her unborn child.
