Den unge pojken Theo Decker överlever mirakulöst en explosion på ett konstmuseum i New York. Hans mamma klarar sig inte och hennes död lämnar ett oläkbart sår hos Theo. Under åren som följer blir Theo uppslukad av en liten vacker målning, Steglitsan, ett värdefullt konstverk från 1600-talet. Tavlan kommer att dra in honom i konstens kriminella undre värld.
