En septemberdag 1937 anländer ungraren Andras Lévi med tåg till Paris. Med sig från Budapest har han ett stipendium, en resväska, en stor trälåda att leverera och ett mystiskt brev som han har lovat skicka till en okänd mottagare. I Europa rycker kriget allt närmare och när det bryter ut skiljs släkten, vänner och älskande åt.
