The story of three men who try to cope with the horrors of the Somme in 1916: John, the naive young countryman who has already seen too much horror; Lothar, the renegade aristocrat who resists becoming a dead German hero; and Viney, the brooding, menacing Australian deserter who is the king of this no-man's land.
