The riddle of the third mile

The riddle of the third mile

It began in the battle of El Alamein in 1942. Two brothers serving as corporals attributed the death of their younger brother to the cowardice of an officer called Lieutenant Browne-Smith. Many years later Browne-Smith receives an exciting letter offering the chance of undetected sexual depravity. Thus he sets out quite eagerly from Oxford to London, but he is destined never to make the return journey.
